What is a Heat only or conventional boiler?
A Heat only boiler, is basically the actual boiler unit. Unlike the system boiler the heat only boiler does not incorporate a pump, expansion vessel or safety valve.
Theses components would have to be added to the installation for the boiler to work and produce heat, the heat only boiler is suited to a sealed Sealed type of heating system and an open vented type of system( small header tank in the attic with an open vent pipe).
A main disadvantage to this type of boiler would be from a warranty perspective, Should a pump fail or safety valve etc, this would not be covered under the standard manufacturing warranty as only internal parts to the boiler would be.
A System boiler is one of the most commonly installed boilers in the Irish market. It incorporates most of the components required to run a heating system. Internally there are many components that are required to operate the boiler to produce heat such as :
The benefits of using a system boiler over a normal Heat only or conventional boiler would be that all the parts internally will be covered under the manufacturers warranty provided the appliance is serviced annually. We specialise in Viessmann, IDEAL, and Worcester Bosch gas boiler and come with extended warranties.
A Storage combi boiler is different than your system boiler and Heat only boiler. The main advantage of a combi boiler is that it can heat up water directly from the boiler and produce hot water at your hot water outlets, such as showers, baths, taps etc.
This removes the need for a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard, thus creating more space in the home.
The storage combi is as what it describes, it has a small cylinder attached to the boiler internally that is always hot, when the hot water is drawn off through an outlet the boiler uses the stored water in the cylinder for high pressure showers, taps etc. The boiler then reheats the water in the cylinder as it is been used.
The Viessmann 111 storage combi boasts the equivalent of a 180ltre hot water cylinder with 18ltrs per minute flow rate. This storage combi can run 2 or more shower at a time with out a struggle. The placement of this particular boiler has to be considered as this is one of the largest boilers available due to the stored water facility.
When we install all our combi boilers we recommend installing a pump, the pump then drives the water to all the outlets, including the cold water supply and the hot water supply thus giving the customer a high pressure water system. In most instances we recommend upgrading the cold water storage tank in the attic for water capacity in the sytem feeding the pump.

How a combi boiler works?
Under normal conditions when the heating is running and heating up radiators, when a hot water outlet is opened such as a kitchen sink tap, the internal diverter valve switches over form the heating side to the hot water side and heats up the incoming water that passes over the internal heat exchanger in the boiler, heating up the water as it flows to the outlet.
Combi boilers generally come in larger kw out puts in comparison to the system boilers or heat only boilers, due to having to heat up domestic hot water so quickly. It is important when choosing a comi boiler for your home that it is sized correctly and that the Flow rates for hot water are adequate for your outlets.
Single combi boilers are well suited to apartments, and smaller properties such as a 3 to 4 bed semi detached with a main bathoom with 1 shower or bath and a downstairs kitchen sink, or understairs toilet basin.
Here at Gas Pro heating Ltd we specialize in combi conversions from standard system boilers, it is becoming very common to retro fit combination boilers in attic spaces, as most of the pipework can be linked back in to the hot press when the hot water tank is removed.
